CapU’s Bachelor of Design Class of 2028 Shares Summer Highlights and Second-Year Plans
We asked 2nd-year Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication students to share their summer highlights and what they are looking forward to in their second year. The responses paint a picture of a creative, energetic, and motivated cohort. Over the summer, students recharged by connecting with friends and family, exploring nature, and pursuing personal creative projects like drawing, doodling, sewing, and jewelry-making.
Looking ahead, they’re eager to develop new skills in UX/UI, web and motion design, illustration, and animation, while also building professional portfolios and gaining real-world experience. Many are focused on balancing productivity with creative freedom, integrating their personal style and identity into their academic work, and taking creative risks. In short, this is a passionate, diverse group poised to merge personal artistic exploration with professional growth.
“I got to see a lot of old friends I haven’t been able to see for a while and I spent a lot of time making beaded necklaces and earrings. ”
“My summer highlights are going on hikes and visiting new lakes and beaches. I’m looking forward to learning more about UX/UI in my second year.”
“My summer highlights are beach/cafe hopping and eating good food! I’m most excited for Shayne and Pascal’s illustration courses and leveling up on software skills.”
“I got to draw a couple times (like twice lol) with my own passions and goals, something I wasn’t able to do during the school year, cause I didn’t have time :3 4 am gaming nights with my friends are something I’m really gonna miss! Can’t wait to put my own passions into my projects and illustrations, as I feel like I’ve gotten a better grasp on what my personal style and taste are. I want to be able to have my own identity by the end of the year.”
“Being out and about in nature! going on fishing trips and going camping! I also loved going on hikes! I’m really excited to learn how to make websites! I’m also excited to make more cool art!”
“Doodling at pretty cafes with friends, looking at cool bugs and birds, and exploring what I enjoy making artistically by drawing whatever and whenever I want. Taking more creative risks, expanding my skillset into motion and web design, and getting better a little every day.”
“I custom-designed and sewed over 15 bags for people in my city and gained new experiences and skills regarding commissions while doing so. SUCH a fun experience being able to sell my designs and getting back into some fashion design after not doing so since leaving high school. I’m super excited to be in Pascal and Shayne’s classes again!! I really enjoyed being in their classes in my first year and really look forward to learning more illustration techniques and starting to get into the animation side of things in Shayne’s class this year!”
“Hanging out with friends, having time to make art for myself (I type as I only made one unfinished painting), and not shivering in the cold *teeth chatter* I’m looking forward to learning how to make more complex illustrations in Adobe Illustrator.”
“I went back to my home country and got to see my family and friends again.”
“Going back home to my friends and family. I’m looking forward to fun projects and practicing healthy productivity.”
“This summer I worked to pay off my student loans. I’m looking forward to building a strong portfolio in Branding for internships.”
