Impossible Interview: Beatrix Potter and Hayao Miyazaki Enjoy a Plein Air Picnic
Stories that involve depicting both the beautiful and whimsical aspects of the world are my bread and butter, so I wanted to show two hardworking artists who's work overlaps in many areas in a calm, relaxed environment. I'd like to hope that even after drawing for their careers their whole lives, they'd find the joy in themselves to paint a pretty landscape together on a sunny day as their fantastical creations carry out a picnic heist.
Conceptual movie poster: Anatomy of a Fall
A fun project! It was one where I had no idea of where I was going with the idea until I did. I did tons of research in the beginning, plus a bunch of thumbnails and clean sketches, but I wasn't really satisfied with it until a day before the due date where I added one thing. Vida was really helpful in making my hand-lettered type not look horrible, and was with me every step of the way with honest and applicable feedback.
First Year Highlights
The student-organized Halloween movie night was so fun! I got to talk to a lot of my classmates in a non-academic setting for the first time (we were in the classroom, but it's hard to talk about work when there's pizza and oreos).
I absolutely adored the lectures from the survey classes, especially ones where you could obviously tell that the instructor was really knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. I've gained such a valuable, wide view of both illustration and design history, which has enriched both my skills and passion for art. If I could go back and listen to each lecture again with 8 hours of sleep, I would do so with no hesitation.
I learned that giving and receiving feedback is an art form. We receive so many opportunities to get critiqued by our lovely and knowledgeable instructors. Yet, it never really gets any less nerve-wracking to put your work out there to be analyzed by professionals who have likely seen hundreds of the same assignment. I've learned to fear it less and now look forward to applying suggestions from eyes that aren't my own in order to improve and make cooler things in the future.
