Gouache Landscape: The Lake

This IDES 131 project stands out to me for three reasons. It was my first ever use of goauche paint, which became a favourite medium of mine, and at the time it was a suprise how easily I took to it. Secondly, plain enough, I love how it looks; the brilliant colours and the balance of realism and abstraction are very Me, in a word. And finally, speaking of those colours, the original photo I took while on a summer trip to Ontario with my best friend appears far duller and doesn't capture what it looked like, or more importantly, felt like to be on the Lake. My depiction feels truer in that sense and I love it for that.

Photography Self Portrait: Dialogue

IDES 133 was my introduction to photography, and it filled a wanting void in my multimedia toolbelt. For this piece my varied skillset is on display, as aside from some minor digital touch ups, all the visual effects were achieved practically. The colour and style is based on my own illustrative work, and is achieved through makeup -- an artistic medium I enjoy but don't get to use often -- and the duality is not photo collage, but a single long exposure shot. I was given 100% on this piece, and I take that with pride. I'll spare you the rest of the philosophical artist's statement and leave you to your conclusions about what exactly this self portrait says about me, though. Cheers!

First Year Highlights

Being able to see so many other talented people and their work is immensely inspiring. I cannot understate the value of my classmates insights and feedback, and I've enjoyed sharing my adoration and critique with all of them.

I really loved getting to work with such a wide variety of mediums and styles and intended outcomes. Perhaps the best part of IDEA is its interdiciplinary and multimedia approach; you get a little of everything.

Honestly, late nights in the class make up most of my best memories here, whether it's one of our movie nights, or the countless hours of illustration and other assignments, or just chatting with my classmates. I hope, in fact, my friends.
