No fun in this class (again)—IDEA 3rd Year Studio and Photography Workshop by Rick Etkin
Workshop leader and photographer, Rick Etkin, returned this Fall to work with a motivated and energetic group of the 3rd year students. He gave a basic working and practical overview of lighting and photography techniques for the studio. The course plan offers the basics that a designer could use to light simple products and people for use in their layouts.

Four IDEA School of Design students selected for Jeff Burgess' annual summer mentorship
Visual artist, illustrator, and educator, Jeff Burgess mentors four IDEA School of Design students in his studio one day a week over the summer. The students participating this summer are Sophie Young, Aidan Zecchel, Alison Johnstone and Charise Wang. We visited his studio in the early weeks to capture some images of the work being created and interview the students. We hope you enjoy!
Sínulkhay and Ladders—Squamish designer Michelle Nahanee helps to decolonize IDEA21
Every year our 2nd-year students take on a project to help them understand the challenges of reconciliation in Canada. It is an opportunity to ask ourselves how we can become stronger allies for Canada’s Indigenous peoples. This year we kicked things off for IDEA21 with a visit from Squamish designer and workshop facilitator, Michelle Nahanee.
Eighth Annual Studio Gallery 3311 Show—IDEA Students mentored by Jeff Burgess
Jeff Burgess mentors four IDEA students in his studio one day a week over the summer which he's been doing for eight years now. The purpose is to create a body of small works that are then exhibited early in September where the students sell their pieces for reasonable prices. Following their intuition with George Littlechild
Alberta born Cree artist, George Littlechild came to spend the morning with us as part 2 of a wonderful collaboration with aboriginal students and faculty at Capilano University. He asked the class to use their intuition to create an image, or symbol that represented them: something that would touch their souls and bring them comfort.
Ola Volo (BFA, Emily Carr University) Talk
IDEA students were lucky to be invited to see the incredibly talented Ola Volo, a Canadian illustrator from Kazakhstan, talk about her work which helps to shape and beautify outdoor spaces in Vancouver.
