Congratulations to Tina Trinh (IDEA22) on winning 2nd place in this spring’s CAPIC's Rodeo 11 national Canadian student competition for her oil painting and surpassing 15,000 Instagram followers! Congratulations to Teresa Cantu (IDEA Grad 2020) for gaining the RGD Honourable Mention for Packaging Design for her “Scotch & Ginger” branding project.

Teresa incorporates storytelling of Celtic mythology into her product packaging for a fictitious barber shop with Scottish roots. This was a very fun project for Teresa and she learned that thorough research is extremely important in design.

Congratulations to Joyce Chan (IDEA Grad 2022) for gaining the RGD Honourable Mention for Print Design for her “The Great Gatsby” Book Cover Design.

Congratulations to Haluka Yagi (IDEA Grad 2021) for winning the Global Class of Top Talent award from Adobe! Braille Literacy Canada Community Report was her first big design project in 2nd Year at IDEA School of Design at Capilano University. This fictional community report incorporates braille and braille imagery throughout the book to familiarize the reader with this non-verbal form of communication. Capilano University’s IDEA School of Design students won 14/50 Advertising & Design Club of Canada (ADCC) Student Awards this year. Not bad for our first time entering! We didn’t get any golds, but 3 silvers and 11 merits. Shown above: Adventure Bug by Danielle Adams (Graphic Design Silver).

The Brief: You are helping to brand an urban, mid-priced restaurant called The Harvest Room that prides itself on its changing regional menu with healthy ingredients sourced from local farmers. The clientele is mostly millennials and young families. Giving back to the community is important to The Harvest Room, so it also donates 2% of its total sales to a local food bank and shelter.

The Harvest Room, indeed! IDEA School of Design students Ashley Loo (Design), Charmaine Cheng (Advertising), and Jominca Engelbrecht (Illustration) were all selected by Applied Arts judges as the top winners of the annual $1,500 scholarships! Congrats also to our runner-up, Emily R Powers (Illustration) who won a $1000 scholarship!

Many congratulations to Rae Maher, who won a $1,000 Jim Rimmer scholarship last week for her poster series on albinism at the GDC's Type Night in Vancouver. Finalists from IDEA School of Design include Annie Chang, Angela Schmold, Ashley Visvanathan and Charmaine Cheng.

IDEA School of Design students Pamella Pinard (Honorable Mentions) and Alice Zeng (Honorable Mention and Merit) both placed in the prestigious 3x3 Illustration Annual contest. Their illustrations are reproduced in the 3x3 Illustration Annual No.14 shipping November 2017. 

Shay Klassen wins Advertising category in the 2017 George Haroutiun National Scholarship Awards, with Jesse Ellingson runner up in the Design category.
