Four IDEA Students Shine at DesCan Awards: Jerry Kambashi & Louis Yau Take Home the Jim Rimmer Award

This week, CapU's IDEA School of Design’s creativity and dedication were on full display at the Design Professionals of Canada (DesCan) awards. We are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of four outstanding IDEA students: Jerry Kambashi, Louis Yau, Charis Catotocan, and Crescille Buyuccan, whose work demonstrates empathy, collaboration, and exceptional design skill. The awards evening was a powerful reminder of the talent and hard work our students bring to every project.

Jim Rimmer Award: Jerry Kambashi & Louis Yau

Huge congratulations to Jerry Kambashi and Louis Yau for receiving the prestigious Jim Rimmer Award for their project, “Hope Theatre.” The project was developed in our Social Enterprise class in response to a brief from instructor Elyssa Schmid.

Hope Theatre is a social enterprise concept that provides meaningful employment and creative empowerment for formerly incarcerated women (FIW), using performance and storytelling as a platform for rebuilding confidence, opening pathways back into community.

The success was a true team effort, something award-winner Jerry Kambashi was quick to acknowledge:

I couldn’t have done it any better without Louis A. Yau, and I can’t thank Chelsea Bell Eady, Elyssa Schmid, Shayne Letain and Jai Djwa enough for pushing us to refine the project to where it is now.

Thank you Design Professionals of Canada (DesCan) for the opportunity and support!
— Jerry Kambashi

Honourable Mention: Charis Catotocan & Crescille Buyuccan

Many congratulations to Charis Catotocan and Crescille Buyuccan for earning an honourable mention for their exceptional project, “Through & Through.” This work was a response to instructor Tom Duguid’s brief for his concentration project, and its recognition is well-deserved.

Through&through is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Filipino overseas parents who selflessly leave their homes to provide for their families back in the Philippines.
— Charis Catotocan and Crescille Buyuccan

IDEA School of Design’s Bachelor of Design co-coordinator, Chelsea Bell Eady, who attended the ceremony, connected these achievements to the core values of our program:

Dedication to empathy, creativity, and collaboration has led you all to create exceptional work.
— Chelsea Bell Eady, Bachelor of Design Co-Coordinator

Faculty Inspiration: Matt Heximer

Warms my heart to see them putting to use the skills they learned during the ‘Intro to Type Design’ workshop at Cap last January!!!
— Matt Heximer, 10Four Design Group

Chelsea also highlighted a fantastic presentation from faculty member Matt Heximer, which served as a source of inspiration for everyone in attendance:

Matt Heximer’s presentation on the typography intensive he completed at Cooper Union in Manhattan over the summer was a great piece of inspiration for us all and a real treat to behold. Beautiful glyphs!

A Community of Support

The success of our students is amplified by the organizations that create these opportunities for recognition.

Thanks as always to Design Professionals of Canada (DesCan) for supporting creative excellence through your scholarships, awards, and advocacy.
— Chelsea Bell Eady, Bachelor of Design Co-Coordinator

The success of Jerry, Louis, Charis, and Crescille is a brilliant testament to the vibrant and supportive creative community we are building together. Their achievements remind us what is possible when talent meets dedication. Congratulations once again to our award-winning students; your hard work inspires us all, and we cannot wait to see what you create next.
