Anya Ali Mulzet’s Illustration “Daydreamer” Wins First Place in CAPIC Rodeo 17 Student Competition

We are proud to spotlight Anya Ali Mulzet, whose stunning illustration, “Daydreamer,” has won First Place in the prestigious CAPIC Rodeo 17 national student competition, recognized by judges for its sensitive rendering and captivating introspective narrative.

The award-winning piece, an oil painting portrait of Anya’s best friend, began as a project for IDES 131: Survey and Principles of Illustration I.

“The project was designed to test our skills with water-based oil paint as well as our ability to capture an accurate likeness of our subject. I chose to paint my best friend. We were encouraged to experiment with styles of brushwork and refrain from overblending - which could distract from the medium’s unique thickness and richness,” writes Anya.

“Daydreamer” impressed the CAPIC judges with its skillful technique and the quiet, relatable moment of contemplation it conveys, turning a personal connection into a universally resonant image.

A Historic Sweep for IDEA School of Design at Capilano University
