Happy Halloween from IDEA School of Design

We’re thrilled to feature some work from first-year IDEA School of Design students (IDEA Grad 2026)! Shown above: “Harvest Moon” by Mena Mcgill (IDEA Grad 2026). Early Applications for IDEA School of Design Fall 2023 begin November 4, 2022 on SlideRoom. Explore CapU, the in-person open house for CapU’s IDEA School of Design is Nov. 19, 2022!

“Flame” by Andy Poystila

“Perfection” by Rachel Lu (IDEA Grad 2026) as part of Rachel’s application to IDEA

Fine liner on paper

This piece expresses what it feels like to always strive for perfection. Many times it feels as though all eyes are on the subject. Often it puts pressure on the individual and makes them feel as though they've lost their mind (represented by the headless figure)

“The High Priestess (Tarot Card)” by Rachel Lu (IDEA Grad 2026) as part of Rachel’s application to IDEA

Fine Liner on paper

The high priestess in reverse symbolizes a disconnect mentally or emotionally that needs to be tended to.

“Flame” by Jacob Chong

“Skeletons” by MESH (Nimesh Devkota)

“Rodent Queen” by Scarlett Side

“Don't Die Alone” watercolor painting by Sarah Gee (IDEA Grad 2026) as part of Sarah’s application to IDEA

“Laundry Day” 11x14 oil on canvas by Amanda Chau (IDEA Grad 2026) as part of Amanda’s application to IDEA

With this piece, I chose to paint an acrylic underpainting, which I regret. Many layers were needed to cover the burnt sienna and I tried out many colours to try to cancel out the warm tones. With enough layers and a lot of white paint, I was able to achieve the dated, washed out look.
