Congratulations to Sophie Young (IDEA Grad 2021) for winning Applied Arts 2020 Student Award and gaining 2020 RGD Awards of Specialty — Domtar Award for Print Design Honourable Mention with 'Vancouver Heritage Postcards' Design Series (shown above).
The mission of this project is to document Vancouver’s history and ever-changing culture in ways dusty historical documents never could. These postcards were created to help locals and visitors alike celebrate their city pride and memories in the form of paper goods that can be shared with their community.

“Sophie did this project for her 3rd year Entreprenurial project, in which students create and brand a small business around a product they design. Sophie created a post card system that would be targeted at visitors to Vancouver and sold at hotels or other tourist attractions. The unique thing about this is the scalability that could be applied - there are numerous interesting stories about Vancouver that could be illustrated within these collectible cards, with new stories delivered on a regular timeline.”

“The student presented a finished project in all its components. The choice of colors, fonts, and style of illustrations integrate very well with the idea of the project. The style of the map is very good. A little tip for next time. Next time you talk about something in your description, in this case, the logo shows it off. The idea was very interesting but difficult to see. Overall GOOD JOB!”
“Excellent illustrations and inspired choice of subject matter to breathe fresh air into the stories of well-trodden historic buildings. Especially unique in the sea of old standard postcards.”
“Lovely illustrations and nice concept! Typography needs a little clean up and the idea of the project is nice, it would be interesting to take it beyond the assignment and make a deck of cards or a little book that expands on these really great illustrations.”
