Ashley Visvanathan's immersive summer 2017 internship at Vancouver's Toolbox Design

Ashley Visvanathan's immersive summer 2017 internship at Vancouver's Toolbox Design

by Ashley Visvanathan, Grad 2020

I knew I wanted to trade my usual summer job at a restaurant for a chance to cut my teeth in a studio. Thanks to a very kind instructor and a generous studio President, Toolbox Design became my home from 9 to 5 this summer.

“IDEA has armed me with the skills I need to do my job. The assignments and skills taught in the Bachelor of Design program reflect what I was asked to do in the studio.”

The folks at Toolbox really understand how to create a worthwhile intern experience. As well as giving me projects to work on, they allowed me to participate in many of the goings-on around the studio. I attended video and photoshoots, joined client meetings, sat with production designers, and brainstormed with copywriters.

Being immersed in the day-to-day requirements of a designer, I realized just how well IDEA has armed me with the skills I need to do my job. The assignments and skills taught in the Bachelor of Design program reflect what I was asked to do in the studio. The internship also gave me a chance to take note of the skills I need to sharpen to become a more valuable studio member.

Interning at Toolbox validated my career pursuit. Before working in a professional setting, I wasn’t sure what I was capable of, and the internship gave me the confidence to lean into my work more self-assured.

The most valuable part of my internship was the people I met. Having exposure to people who were at all stages of their design careers and tapping into their lived experiences was invaluable. Many of those I met are now willing to vouch for me, set up meetings, or write reference letters after having spent a summer together. I saw how so much of this industry is based on the network of people you surround yourself with.

I am so grateful that James Ducommun (Founder and President of Toolbox) sees the value in taking chances on students, by giving them their first break in the industry. Thank you!
